Its aim is to improve access to information on marine resources in the region by: (i) collecting, cataloguing and preserving relevant documents in print and electronic formats, especially grey literature; (ii) disseminating information via new products and services; (iii) supporting the development of regional libraries and information centres through training and technical assistance; and (iv) cooperating with similar networks and institutions throughout the world, including IAMSLIC, FAO and IOC. ODIN-PIMRIS is a pilot project that contributes to the objectives of PIMRIS, by focussing on: establishing a regional marine information portal creating capacity at national and institutional level to use & contribute to the portal promoting the portal as a valuable information source for managers and decision makers PROJECT INFORMATION The ODIN-PIMRIS Project, a joint initiative by participants of PIMRIS and the IODE programme of UNESCO/IOC was established in 2008 in response to the Pacific Islands regional need for improved marine and fisheries information access. The main objective of the project is to create a regional marine information portal that incorporates existing information sources developed by Pacific regional agencies and supports the development of institutional e-repositories for national marine and fisheries agencies. Phase 1 of the ODIN-PIMRIS (2008-2009) project and its successful completion in 2009, enabled the development of e-repositories and supported the digitisation of some relevant and important documents in five pilot countries (Cook Is, Fiji, Kiribati, Samoa & Solomon Islands). Pacific national marine and fisheries departments produce valuable collections of published and unpublished materials which can be preserved in electronic format to avoid their degradation and loss and also enhance information sharing. IOC/IODE-XXI/33 Page 2 Although agency participants such as FFA, SPREP, SPC, SOPAC and USP (University of the South Pacific) have their own digital libraries and e-repositories, PIMRIS Coordination Unit also maintains a separate standard e-collection structure based on Greenstone software platform for national departmental collections in the region and e-copies of relevant documents submitted by project partners including regional organisations. This regional e-repository was created to secure a stable on-line access to all regional fisheries and marine information. The ODIN-PIMRIS project hopes to achieve the following outcomes: Better management of national institutions published and unpublished information Secure long term storage and protection of important national marine/fisheries information Enhance sharing of and access to published and unpublished information Development of skills and capacity to identify important resources available elsewhere ACTIVITIES COMPLETED & ACHIEVEMENTS OF 2009 & 2010 A joint PIMRIS CU & IODE Project Office letter addressed to Heads of Fisheries (HoF) in Pacific Island countries (PICs) requesting support for ODIN-PIMRIS project initiatives and identifying a national project contact person. Formal relations with national fisheries and marine agencies were established. Project Information session at the 6th SPC HoF meeting in Noumea, New Caledonia (February 2009). Structuring and customisation of PIMRIS Regional Repository as well as five digital collections for national fisheries agencies in Cook Islands, Fiji, Kiribati, Samoa & Solomon Is. One-week workshop on the creation of the ODIN-PIMRIS Web Portal in Oostende, Belgium (March 2009). Five-day E-repository Training Workshop for five governmental participants (Cook Is., Fiji, Kiribati, Samoa & Solomon Is.) at USP, Suva, Fiji (August 2009). Expert visits to Kiribati Fisheries Division, Samoa Fisheries Division and Cook Islands Ministry of Marine Resources to assist with the initial input to departmental digital collections (2009-early 2010). Joint SPC/PIMRIS letter addressed to the HoFs in the region seeking their assistance and cooperation in establishing a mechanism for regular submission of departmental publications to PIMRIS Coordination Unit for the Regional Repository. The Pacific Islands Marine Portal - HYPERLINK "http://www.pimrisportal.org"http://www.pimrisportal.org has been established and was launched at the University of the South Pacific in March 2010. Poster for the launch was designed by SOPAC and has been distributed regionally and internationally. The ODIN-PIMRIS project website was established in March 2010 and hosted by the Project Office of IODE. PIMRIS Coordinator has been working on populating the website and Peter Murgatroyd of SPREP had taken over the role temporarily when Maria Kalenchits left USP. Ms Jainul Ali, Library Assistant for PIMRIS Coordination Unit and Dorene Naidu from SOPAC, were funded by the IODE Project Office to attend the Ocean Teacher Academy course on Disaster Response and Planning for Marine Libraries/Information Centre in Belgium from 1-7 July 2010. IOC/IODE-XXI/33 Page 3 CHALLENGES FOR THE PROJECT Maria Kalenchits, PIMRIS Coordinator and founding coordinator of the ODIN-PIMRIS project since 2008, left USP on 9 April 2010 and her replacement Susana Macanawai resumed duties in November 2010. The University Librarian, Joan Yee supervised ODIN-PIMRIS activities between April and early November 2010. The 2010 planned review meeting for the Pilot Project (Phase I) was deferred and will now take place in May 2011. Planned activities for Phase II of the project (work plan adopted in 2009 for 2010-2011) could not be carried out due to several reasons including delays in the Universitys recruitment process and the University Librarians tight work schedules. Phase II planned activities are to be implemented in 2011. Susana Macanawai new project coordinator needs training on Pacific Islands Marine Portal which is hosted by IODE Project Office. Peter Murgatroyd (Manager-Information Centre/Library at SPREP), a founding member of ODIN-PIMRIS and temporary editor of ODIN-PIMRIS portal when Maria Kalenchits left, resigned from SPREP and returned to New Zealand in late January 2011. Eleanor Kleiber, librarian for the Secretariat of the Pacific Community (SPC) and a founding member of ODIN-PIMRIS will leave SPC at the end of her current contract in April 2011. Initial budget proposed for 2010 activities has been reduced and thus, the PIMRIS coordination unit will have to reconsider ODIN-PIMRIS planned activities & budget for 2011-2013.
