Almost all the inhabitants and the economic activities, as well as the transport infrastructures are located in a narrow strip not more than 2 Km wide along 350 km of coast. Close to the most wealthy part of northern Italy, an additional pressure is represented by the tourism coming from this area, with a high demand on second homes and facilities, as marinas and golf courses. Therefore the pressure on the coastal land exploitation is very strong and urbanisation, having occupied the scarce coastal plains, are rising on the hills facing the sea with additional problems of soil erosion and landslide hazards. Among the first in Mediterranean Liguria Region in 2000 approved a Coastal Territorial Plan inspired to the ICZM principles and aimed to managed some of these problems. The Plan tries to fill the void existing at national level about the coastal issues, dealing with urbanization with special attention to the coastal erosion and the seabed protection. In 2010 the Region adopted a new important tool, the Plan for the protection of the marine and coastal environment PTAMC, which is developed for each sedimentary cell. The Plan is aimed to fostering the natural coastal processes, both for the sediment dynamics and the habitats conservation. These plans, also based on a Coastal Geographic Information System constantly updated, can contribute to prevent some of the man made damages in the coastal area.
