The majority of the ASFA bibliographic records refer to articles appearing in scientific journals. Hence these articles usually report on the results of original, peer reviewed scientific research. Most often, at the base of these scientific research papers will be some form of data collection or creation and its subsequent analysis to arrive at the conclusion of the paper. However, the articles that are cited in the ASFA database most often do not (although some do) contain the complete raw data sets themselves. Rather they contain some of the main statistics upon which the conclusions were drawn. In the case of statistics, it might be relevant to note that the results of an ASFA search often includes relevant Web-sites. In some cases, these web-sites contain, if not the original raw data sets themselves, extensive statistical databases that allow for the manipulation of the statistics. Nonetheless, in the preparation of an ASFA bibliographic record, there is no reason why the record could not (or could not be made to) record or point to a raw dataset which is either part of or separate from the document being indexed. The current worksheet for creating an ASFA record is rich in fields, now containing 40 (between fields and sub-fields). An additional URL field, specifically pointing to a raw dataset which is stored in some repository, could easily be added to the ASFA input worksheet and consequently appear in the final ASFA database record. In addition, one may note that currently when we, the ASFA inputters, create a bibliographic record for a document which contains a considerable amount of numerical data (in tables or annexes), besides assigning the relevant indexing terms from the ASFA Thesaurus, the inputter will also mark the Literary Style field with an N which stands for Numerical Data. And if the nature of the numerical data contained in the document is not evident from the title of the document, the ASFA inputter will indicate the type of data in the Notes field with a short description (e.g. in a document entitled Fisheries of the North Sea, the note in the Notes Field might read; Incl: Data on catch, effort and landings. It is also important to note, that when searching the ASFA database, one can search (i.e. limit the search) using numerical data as search parameter. In conclusion, based on the above limited observations, it would appear that as far as the ASFA database is concerned, the citing of datasets in the ASFA records, or as a separate ASFA record, would not present much of a problem to most ASFA inputters. What would be much less feasible would be to request the ASFA Partners to take a raw data set, organize/describe it etc., and deposit it in some dedicated repository. Nonetheless, the ASFA partners could be asked to remind (advocate) to the research scientists in their institutes as to the importance of and need to publish/archive their raw data somehow and some where. Richard Pepe (Editor-in-Chief ASFA) FAO, Fisheries and Aquaculture Department Rome, Italy (June 2008) ASFA THESAURUS (some descriptors dealing with data and statistics) Each ASFA record included in the ASFA database is assigned by the indexer with subject, taxonomic (when relevant) and geographic descriptors (when relevant), as this is the standard practice in preparing records for inclusion in the ASFA database. The subject descriptors are chosen from the ASFA Thesaurus. There are over 6000 ASFA Subject descriptors and 3000 cross-reference terms. The objectives of he surveys were to (1) evaluate the distribution and ecology of juvenile Pacific salmon ( Oncorhynchus spp.) during their first year in the ocean, (2) describe the ambient oceanographic conditions, and (3) quantify the biomass of zooplankton. Fish, oceanographic, and zooplankton sampling was conducted at stations spanning the area from Barkley Sound on the west coast of Vancouver Island in British Columbia (48.86 degree N) to Icy Strait in Southeast Alaska A total of 2072 Pacific slamon were caught on the survey. Of these, 354 were juvenile pink salmon (O.gobuscha), 471 were juvenile chum salmon (O.keta), 195 were juvenile sockeye salmon (O.nerka) and 299 were juvenile coho salmon (O.kisutch) in their first fall in the ocean and 589 were chinook slamon (O.tshawytscha) under 350 mm in fork length.Juvenile pink, chum, and coho were caught on the shelf throughout the survey area from the wet coast of British Columbia and Southeast Alaska. Juvenile sockeye were caught on the shelf and along the inside passages from Queen Charlotte Sound to Southeast Alaska. None wer caught on the west coast of Vacouver Island. Juvenile chinook from 100 to 199 mm in fork length, that are most likely ocean ecotypes, were caught of Vancouver Island. Juvenile chinook from 200 to 350 mm in fork lenght, that are most likely age 1.0 stream ecotypes, were more wide-spreadly distributed. They were caught on the shelf and within the inlets on the west coast of Vancouver Island, Portland Inlet, Dixon Entreance, and in Sumner Strait and Icy Strait in Southeast Alaska. IS: ISSN 0022-3670 EI: Electronic ISSN 1520-0485 DE: Descriptors Article Subject Terms: Indexing in process AB: Abstract Satellite and in situ observations in the equatorial Atlantic Ocean during 2002-03 show dominant spectral peaks at 40-60 days and secondary peaks at 10-40 days in sea level and thermocline within the intraseasonal period band (10-80 days). A detailed investigation of the dynamics of the intraseasonal variations is carried out using an ocean general circulation model, namely, the Hybrid Coordinate Ocean Model (HYCOM). Two parallel experiments are performed in the tropical Atlantic Ocean basin for the period 2000-03: one is forced by daily scatterometer winds from the Quick Scatterometer (QuikSCAT) satellite together with other forcing fields, and the other is forced by the low-passed 80-day version of the above fields. To help in understanding the role played by the wind-driven equatorial waves, a linear continuously stratified ocean model is also used. Within 3 degree S-3 degree N of the equatorial region, the strong 40-60-day sea surface height anomaly (SSHA) and thermocline variability result mainly from the first and second baroclinic modes equatorial Kelvin waves that are forced by intraseasonal zonal winds, with the second baroclinic mode playing a more important role. Sharp 40-50-day peaks of zonal and meridional winds appear in both the QuikSCAT and Pilot Research Moored Array in the Tropical Atlantic (PIRATA) data for the period 2002-03, and they are especially strong in 2002. Zonal wind anomaly in the central-western equatorial basin for the period 2000-06 is significantly correlated with SSHA across the equatorial basin, with simultaneous/lag correlation ranging from -0.62 to 0.74 above 95% significance. Away from the equator (3 degree -5 degree N), however, sea level and thermocline variations in the 40-60-day band are caused largely by tropical instability waves (TIWs). On 10-40-day time scales and west of 10 degree W, the spectral power of sea level and thermocline appears to be dominated by TIWs within 5 degree S-5 degree N of the equatorial region. The wind-driven circulation, however, also provides a significant contribution. Interestingly, east of 10 degree W, SSHA and thermocline variations at 10-40-day periods result almost entirely from wind-driven equatorial waves. During the boreal spring of 2002 when TIWs are weak, Kelvin waves dominate the SSHA across the equatorial basin (2 degree S-2 degree N). The observed quasi-biweekly Yanai waves are excited mainly by the quasi-biweekly meridional winds, and they contribute significantly to the SSHA and thermocline variations in 1 degree -5 degree N and 1 degree -5 degree S regions. DE: Descriptors Article Subject Terms: data collections; data reports; meteorological data; oceanographic data; physical properties; pressure measurement; sea level; spatial variations; time series; wind measurement AB: Abstract The data presented in this report provides information on the spatial and temporal variability of sea level along the Gulf of Alaska coast. In so doing, this study contributed to the understanding of the physical environment in the experimental region of the Fisheries Oceanography Coordinated Investigations (FOCI). Hourly sea level data from four stations along the northern Gulf of Alaska were obtained from National Ocean Services. Six-hourly (at 00Z, 06Z, etc.) sea level pressures at the four sea level stations for the period Jan 1, 1980 to Jul 31, 1989 were obtained by interpolating to those locations from a subgrid, interpolated to 1/4 mesh, of the Fleet Numerical Oceanography Center (FNOC) 63 x 63 polar stereographic surface data grid. Time series of winds at the four sea level stations were then generated by interpolating to the specific geographic locations. To describe and analyze the sources of the spatial and temporal sea level variability in the northern Gulf of Alaska, the raw data described above had to be cleaned and edited to correct recording errors, bridge the many short gaps in the data records, and remove the effects of tides and atmospheric pressure on sea level. Finally, to provide a quantitative estimate of spatial variability, cross-correlations were calculated for each year between the adjusted sea levels at the four stations, and for each bottom pressure recording season between the adjusted sea levels and the bottom pressures.
