In the same line, a final Planning and review workshop of the project and symposium were held in Mombasa, Kenya from 14 to 17 July 2008. These meetings were attended by some Marine Information managers from ODINAFRICA ( Kenya, Senegal, Tanzania, Togo) and also members of Africa regional group of IAMSLIC (AFRIAMSLIC) and some ASFA partners in Africa (Ghana, Uganda) . These meetings were preceded by another meeting of Information managers from ODINAFRICA, ASFA African partners and AFRIAMSLIC members by 12 July 2008 in Mombasa, Kenya. Since, September 2008, an ODINAFRICA IV project proposal was sent for approval and probably funding. Main Information Management Activities in 2008 2008 is a transitional period for ODINAFRICA III project. However, most of the activities planned for the remaining of ODINAFRICA III have been developed. Only, the further development of AFRILIB and its assessment which was postponed due to issue of replacement of inmagic software. Further development of local library catalogues with Inmagic software Further development of OceanDocs Africa (Input increased) Development of Hydrographic, Meteorological, oceanographic Organizations database in Africa; Organisation of meeting for ODINAFRICA MIM with ASFA African partners and AFRIAMSLIC; Participation of some ODINAFRICA MIM communities to ODINAFRICA 7th workshop and 3rd Symposium (Communication from MIM) and some new ASFA partners (Uganda and Ghana) Participation of ODINAFRICA MIM (Kenya) to ASFA board meeting in September 2008 Bergen, Norway. Participation of ODINAFRICA MIM (Tanzania) to IAMSLIC meeting in October 2008 in FIJI In terms of promotion, communications and resources sharing, following activities have been led: Development of document request system through ODINAFRICA IM listserv: HYPERLINK "mailto:odinafrica-im@sympa.iode.org" odinafrica-im@sympa.iode.org Development Chapter on information management in ODINAFRICA Book project Development of newsletter, Poster, leaflet, newsletter from IM (Mauritania, Tanzania, Senegal..) Development and updating of libraries web pages within NODC websites (after the assessment of web presence of IM in ODINAFRICA country websites was done) Development Chapter on information management in ODINAFRICA Book project in order to enhance the visibility of the information activities. Development and updating of libraries web pages within NODC websites (after the assessment of web presence of IM in ODINAFRICA country websites was done) III-MIM proposed activities, products and services in ODINAFRICA IV project Maintenance, updating, upgrading an further development of existing products developed in previous phases of ODINAFRICA (AFRILIB, OCEANDOC, AFRIDIR ...) but also involvement of MIM in products up to now in charge by data community: Marine information managers as editor in African Ocean portal. Marine information managers IM involvement of future Development in African Marine Atlas. The directories, library catalogues and other information sources will be updated, maintained and availed online so that they can act as information sources for the portals. ILMS (Integrated library management system) The focus will be on Upgrading/replacement of software, providing open access to scientific output from ODINAFRICA, and coordination and integration of existing tools. Exchange procedures and standards between the different products will be developed to ensure easy access. OceanDoc-Africa will be improved with new partners recruited and trained to ensure broader coverage. Development of web-based information services The development of news services and applications enabling the linkage of publications to related dataset in the NODCs will be explored. Institutional repositories will be also developed to addresses the local needs. These will hold a wide range of materials such as multimedia resources besides scientific publication, posters. Documents and other information sources in danger of being lost will be identified and included in the repositories. These repositories will be a valuable information source for the management and decision making. Electronic journals: the development of journal view, already implemented for Egyptian Journal of Aquatic Research (Egypt) Bulletin Scientifique delIMROP (Mauritania), Documents Techniques de lIMROP (Mauritania), Document scientifique /Archives du CRODT (Senegal), Tuna Bulletin (Seychelles), and Bulletin de lINSTM-Salammb (Tunisia) will be extended to cover other institutions that produce their own publications. Training in required field in information management will be organized. Annexe1 ODINAFRICA ILMS Requirements Some Reasons for INMAGIC software Replacement Duplicating effort entering same records into various tools/systems, Updating the central catalog AFRILIB and made it used, Still a need to have local catalogue to address local needs but also accessible through the web (linking catalogues to library websites or web pages), Integration of new development to combine references and full text Inmagic web publisher pro is expensive, manage licenses being very costlyunder use of the functionalities of Inmagic DB text, Existence of Open source applications with good functionalities, Compatibility with other systems IAMSLIC Z39.50 Modules needed Cataloguing functions (with thesaurus attached) OPAC with Document delivery (loan ) Journal management (with publisher database linked) Acquisition module Some Specifications needed Open sources solutions Interoperability with OceanDocs, ASFA, Ocean African portal IAMSLIC Z39.50 compliant Multilingual interface versions Easier installation and administration User interface Challenges Identified the more appropriated applications solutions Easy migration from Inmagic to the new one (from CDSISIS to Inmagic was not a success, correction, accent..) PS: The ASFA Board has indicated a willingness to review a proposal submitted by Dr H. Ribynski to write export and import routines for this purpose. For non ASFA Input Centres not using ASFISIS software, a script is being written for download from ASFA into OceanDocs, and it would be beneficial for a similar facility to be written for download of ASFA records to the new Integrated Library Management System to be chosen for ODINS. Annexe2 Status of African ASFA Partners July 2008 There are now Thirteen (13) National ASFA Partners from ASFA, most of them are institutions participating in the Ocean Data and Information Network for Africa (ODINAFRICA): Five (5) Morocco, Nigeria, Guinea are not from ODINAFRICA host institutions) Cte dIvoire : Centre de Recherches Ocanologiques (CRO) Egypt: National Institute of oceanographic and Fisheries (NIOF) Guinea : Centre National des Sciences Halieutiques de Boussoura (CNSHB) Kenya: Kenya Marine and Fisheries Research Institute (KMFRI) Mauritania : Institut Mauritanien de Recherches Ocanographiques et des pches (IMROP) Morocco: Institut National de Recherche Halieutique (INRH) Mozambique : Instituto Nacional de Hidrografia e Navegao (INAHINA) Nigeria: National Institute for Freshwater Fisheries Research (NIFFR) Senegal : Direction des Pches Maritimes Tanzania : Institute of marine Sciences (IMS) Tunisia : Institut National des Sciences et Technologies de la Mer (INSTM) Ghana (CSIR/WRI) Ouganda (NaFIRRI) * Institutions from ODINAFRICA host Countries where there are already an ASFA Partner could be encouraged to be Collaborative centers. $%&'?@KNW[\bcdefpqr " # - .
