The Copernicus Marine Environment Monitoring Service (CMEMS) is one of the six pillar services of the European Copernicus programme. The CMEMS provides regular and systematic reference information (past, present and short term forecast) on the physical state, variability and dynamics of the ocean, ice and marine ecosystems for the global ocean and the European regional seas. CMEMS provides a sustainable response to European user needs in four areas of benefits: (i) maritime safety, (ii) marine resources, (iii) coastal and marine environment, and (iv) weather, seasonal forecast and climate.  An overview of CMEMS, its drivers, organization and users will be given. Service evolution and user uptake strategies will be outlined.  The presentation will then review CMEMS achievements for its first phase (April 2015-April 2018) and main priorities for its second phase (April 2018-April 2201).  The presentation will then be focused on the essential role of ocean observations for CMEMS. Observations are a fundamental pillar of the CMEMS added value chain that goes from observation to information and users. They are used both to elaborate high level data products and to validate and constrain global and regional ocean analysis and forecasting systems. An overview of in-situ and satellite observations that are used today by CMEMS will be given and main CMEMS requirements for satellite and in-situ observations will be detailed.  Results from OSEs (Observing System Evaluations) and OSSEs (Observing System Simulation Experiments) will be presented to illustrate the high dependencies of CMEMS systems wrt observations. Long term perspectives for the development of CMEMS will be finally given and implications for the evolution of the in-situ and satellite observing system will be outlined.
