World Tsunami Awareness Day (WTAD) recognizes the importance of preparedness and the prompt dissemination of information through early warning systems, use of local and traditional knowledge and the “concept of building back better” in the recovery, rehabilitation and reconstruction phases in order to protect the lives of people and prevent the damage caused by tsunamis as referred to in the Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction 2015-2030. WTAD 2020 is focused on Target E and G of the of the Sendai Framework. (e) Substantially increase the number of countries with national and local disaster risk reduction strategies by 2020; (g) Substantially increase the availability of and access to multi-hazard early warning systems and disaster risk information and assessments to people by 2030. Tsunami have claimed many lives and caused tremendous damage to coastal communities. Pacific Island communities have experienced the devastating impact of a tsunami. Since the 1998 tsunami that impact Aitape, Papua New Guinea that resulted in the death of more than 1600 people, about 5000 lives have been lost in the Pacific. These fatalities included lives lost in Solomon Islands in 2007 and 2013 and in Samoa and Tonga in 2009. Following these catastrophic events, governments has increased their investment in tsunami early warning and mitigation system to ensure communities are ready in the event of a tsunami. In this webinar, the panel will discuss how learning and localized action have strengthened tsunami readiness in Pacific Island communities.
