Vessel-based ocean monitoring with applications to R/V Dr Fridtjof Nansen surveys
IOC/OTGA/EAF-Nansen Programme of FAO
Training Course
30 May - 17 June 2022
This course is organized by the EAF-Nansen Programme of FAO in collaboration with the IOC-UNESCO Sub Commission for Africa and the Adjacent Island States and the IOC-IODE Ocean Teacher Global Academy.
Objectives
The course has two main objectives:
- To develop skills among marine environmental scientists participating in the EAF-Nansen Programme to perform onboard duties during surveys concerning the quality control, post-processing and reporting of the physical oceanography data.
- To introduce tools that will enable scientists from partner countries to access and use the collected historical time series at their home institutions (e.g. for preparing publications, reports, etc.).
It is important to ensure that all the main operations onboard the research vessel are standardized and conducted in similar ways independent of who constitute the scientific crew, in order to come up with standardized products. The course is an introduction to methods in quality control, processing, interpretation and reporting of ocean monitoring data from the R/V Dr Fridtjof Nansen surveys, which will support such standardization
It is expected that scientists who successfully complete the course will be able to man relevant environmental stations on the vessel and be able to prepare the environment sections of the Nansen survey reports.
Technical Requirements
For the practical exercises, each participant must bring a laptop computer to the course with the following specifications: Win7/Win10, minimum 8 GB memory and 500 GB free disk space on USB drives or on hard disk.
