Harmful Algae Blooms (HABs) are major disruptors of marine ecosystems and ecosystem services. Biotoxin producing algae responsible of shellfish poisoning are an increasing problem globally, killing fish mammals and birds and threatening seafood safety and security. High biomass blooms are also leading anoxia and other environmental nuisance affecting marine life and the economy of human coastal populations. The development and testing of Early Warning Systems (EWS) for HABs are needed to help meeting local/national obligations of seafood safety regulations and protecting public health, while reducing economic disruptions and minimizing ecosystem-associated losses on fisheries due to HABs. The workshop brings together various stakeholder groups and experts. The aim is through discussion and sharing, to understand stakeholders’ current and emerging needs on EWS for HABs in Namibia, which would serve as the basis the for follow-up design, development of EWS.
