The Solomon Islands National Disaster Management Plan 2018 under the National Disaster Council Act 1989 sets out provision of the development of hazard-specific contingency plans (including the issue of warnings).
The review and update of Tsunami Warning and Response SOP conducted in November 2021 set out a list of recommendations on the finalization of the Tsunami Warning and Response SOP and Tsunami Sub-Plan as stipulated in the 2018 National Disaster Management Plan.
In 2018, Solomon Islands set up its first geohazard monitoring network to provide real-time information on earthquakes, volcanoes and tsunamis. Six seismic monitoring stations installed in six of the nine provinces and a monitoring and observatory centre in the capital Honiara.
In close collaboration with the National Tsunami Warning Centre (NTWC) at Solomon Islands Meteorological Service (SIMS), the National Disaster Management Office (NDMO) and Geological Service Division (GSD), the review and update of the Solomon Islands Tsunami Sub-Plan has been on-going and now prioritized to be finalized before the 2023 Pacific Games in November, 2023.
