Since 2007, UNESCO IOC has been conducting a project titled “Strengthening Tsunami Warning and Emergency Responses: Training Workshops on the Development of Standard Operating Procedures for Indian Ocean and Southeast Asian Countries”, funded through the UNESCAP Multi-Donor Voluntary Trust fund for tsunami preparedness in the Indian Ocean and Southeast Asian Region. The goal of the project is to strengthen existing tsunami warning and emergency responses through training workshops and capacity building missions to assist countries in the development of Standard Operating Procedures (SOP) as part of their Tsunami Warning Centre and Tsunami Emergency Response Plans. As part of this project, UNESCO IOC is organizing a sub-regional training workshop for countries in the South China Sea region. The workshop will be hosted by the Malaysian Meteorological Department (MMD), Petaling Jaya, Malaysia, 4-8 October 2010. The main objective of the workshop is to bring together participants from the National Tsunami Warning Centres (NTWC) of Brunei Darussalam, Cambodia, China, Indonesia, Malaysia, Philippines, Thailand, Singapore and Viet Nam to work on the development of SOPs within the context of potential tsunami hazards generated by the Manila and Sulu trench source zones.
