Activities
- Long experience in EIA & SEA (over 20 projects), including large infrastructure development projects (tourist resort, harbour, cable lying, oil drilling, waste water sea outfall, water resource management), water quality monitoring, or pollution environmental damage assessment, inc. oil pollution (biodiversity inventory, mapping, mitigation, habitat preservation or rehabilitation).
- Experience in coastal processes (coastal erosion and its links to climate change, development of coastal protection systems, sediment dynamics, hydrology).
- Long experience in environmental and biodiversity monitoring and assessment, habitat restoration & rehabilitation, mainly with coastal & marine habitats (incl. mangroves and wetlands), but also terrestial habitats, substantial experience in pollution environmental damage assessment.
- Experience in Country Environmental Profile and Country Environmental Programme identification and formulation (including policy and institutional assessment, regional and international cooperation analysis, natural resources management), and Sector Policy Development.
- Experience in environmental management planning, including reviewing Waste Management Plan or Oil Spill Monitoring and Response Plan.
- Experience in extensive drainage, and freshwater storage and irrigation systems, coastal defense against seawater intrusion (incl. tidal gates and sea outfalls), groundwater and soil salinization issues, flooding, Integrated Water Resource Management.
- Experience in development of water quality monitoring programme (Water Quality Index), and evaluation of water quality improvement projects, all within the frame of the Water Framework Directive, Bathing Water Directives and the new Marine Strategy Framework Directive.
- Experience in protected area management planning (incl. biodiversity assessment, zoning, long term monitoring, sustainable development plan), as well as in Evaluation of protected areas design & management plans, or habitat/species restoration programmes, within the Natura 2000 network, and according to the Habitats and Birds Directives.
- Experience in Climate Change issues (environmental impact, mitigation, adaptation strategies).
- Experience in Programme Evaluation (mid-term and ex-post), including large multi-million programmes and as Team Leader, and in proposal evaluation.
- Long experience in international and multi-disciplinary programmes, including EU and WB-GEF funded projects, from proposal/project design (including EDF and MEDA) through to successful completion. Knowledge of EU legislation pertaining to environmental assessment, such as EIA, SEA, ICZM or Habitat directives, or guidelines such as the Environmental Integration Handbook.

Over twenty years of professional experience in research and development programmes, including ten years at the international level, of which five years in a senior position (Task Leader or Chief Scientist). Extensive field work experience mainly in the Mediterranean area and North Africa (Corsica, Sardinia, Sicily, Libya, Algeria, Tunisia, Morocco, Turkey), the Caribbean (West Indies, Guyana), the Persian Gulf and Arabian Sea (Kuwait, Iran, Pakistan), West Africa (Senegal, Sierra Leone), the Indian Ocean (Comoros, Madagascar, Mauritius, Seychelles) and East Africa (Kenya, Tanzania).
Performed numerous research and development programmes addressing a wide range of environmental issues, natural resources management, biodiversity assessment and conservation, water quality monitoring and Integrated Water Resources Management, climate change impacts and adaptation, EIA and SEA, and Integrated Coastal Zone Management issues, providing an excellent background for efficiently collecting and analysing data in fields as diverse as the marine environment (including underwater), the coastal zone, river basins and the adjacent land areas. Skilled in performing integrated analysis that consider such a system as a whole unit, taking into account the various interactions shaping the relationships linking its various components. Designed and implemented aquaculture development projects (with special interest in sustainable development issues). Managed, or actively took part in, international and multidisciplinary research programmes (experience in leading teams of scientists and technicians of diverse nationality and cultural background). Experience in designing, implementing and supervising fisheries surveys and oceanographic cruises. Experience in using oceanographic research vessels (including as Team Leader) and oceanographic instruments (Nansen/Niskin bottles, Van Veen bottom sampler, current meters, CTD, drogues, plankton net, etc), and fisheries gear (trawl, traps, gillnets). Sampling for physico-chemical analysis of seawater and sediments (including pollutants), analysis and interpretation of laboratory results. Performed bathymetry surveys (sea floor mapping), from a boat, or using an AUV, or underwater using SCUBA diving. Extensive SCUBA diving experience. Diving Instructor with over 2000 hours under water, experience of deep diving (maximum depth reached: 100 m). Twenty years experience in driving and handling boats. Over fifty publications and professional reports.
