Activities
My research activities focus on the sustainable management of marine and freshwater fisheries, stock assessment, and the impacts of climate change and biological invasions. I integrate biological, ecological, and socio-economic approaches to support evidence-based fisheries policy, primarily in the central Mediterranean and North Africa.
Fisheries stock assessment: application of data‑limited models (CMSY++, LBB) and software (FISAT II, VIT, R) to assess stocks of Penaeus kerathurus, Squilla mantis, and small pelagics in GSA 12 (central Mediterranean).
Climate change and invasive species (BLEU-ADAPT project): studying marine invasions (e.g., blue crab Portunus segnis) and fisheries adaptation strategies.
Lagoon and coastal zone management (FAO TCP 3803 Bizerte Lagoon; MedFund La Galite MPA): monitoring small‑scale fisheries, sanitary classification, co‑management, and socio‑economic development.
Freshwater reservoir fisheries (AMBISEPT project): optimising fish exploitation (mullet, carp, barbels) using GIS, assessing threatened native species like Luciobarbus callensis.
Fishing gear technology and bycatch reduction: design and patent of a multi‑mesh gillnet (TN2021/0113), studies on benthic trawl discards.
Aquaculture and valorisation: tilapia farming (freshwater and geothermal waters), biochemical quality of smoked fish, valorisation of underutilised species.
These activities are directly linked to the following subject areas: fisheries management, marine biology, stock assessment, climate change, invasive species, lagoon/coastal management, freshwater ecology, and ecosystem‑based fisheries management.
Sea regions of study
Mediterranean Sea - Western Basin
Mediterranean Sea - Eastern Basin
Comment(s)
Professor of fisheries science with over 20 years of experience in marine and freshwater resource management, stock assessment, and ecosystem-based approaches. Recognised for coordinating international research projects (BLEU-ADAPT, AMBISEPT, FAO TCP) and for contributing to EU Mission "Restore our Ocean and Waters". Holder of a national patent for a multi‑mesh gillnet. Available for scientific collaboration, expert evaluation, and consultancy on sustainable fisheries, climate adaptation, and marine biodiversity conservation in the Mediterranean and Africa.
