Activities
ResM student using predictive habitat modelling to assess the extent and distribution of vulnerable marine ecosystems in the South Atlantic deep sea. Modelling is proving to be an incredibly useful tool to predict where species may live when presence data is unavailable; this is particularly crucial in the deep sea due to its inaccessibility. By using known environmental parameters and species records, I am looking at where vulnerable marine ecosystems, such as cold water coral reefs, may be found in the South Atlantic, including within the national waters of UK offshore territories. This research will hopefully help to inform policy decisions, leading to a better understood and protected deep sea ecosystem in the South Atlantic region.
