Professor (Biological Sciences) at CINVESTAV-IPN Mérida, México. His research focusses on community ecology and taxonomy of parasites, with an emphasis on their use as indicators of environmental impact. He received a BSc (Biology) in 1988 from UNAM, México; a MSc (Marine Biology) in 1990 from CINVESTAV-IPN Mérida, México; and a PhD (Biological Sciences) in 1995 from the University of Exeter, Exeter, UK. He has authored 101 refereed publications, 8 book chapters and 2 books. He has supervised 9 PhD, 14 MSc and 12 BSc students, from Mexico, Colombia, Cuba, Brazil and the Slovak Republic. His distinctions include Member and Vice-President of the Aquatic Animals Health Standards Commission of the World Organization for Animal Health (OIE) (France; 2009–2015) and member of the National Research System (SNI) Level 3 (México; 2010–present).
