Activities

Jumuiya ya Kaunti za Pwani (JKP) is a regional economic bloc that brings together the six coastal counties of Kenya—Mombasa, Kilifi, Kwale, Tana River, Lamu, and Taita Taveta—to promote regional integration, sustainable development, and collective advocacy. The organization focuses on unlocking the economic potential of the Coastal region, with particular emphasis on the Blue Economy and marine-based livelihoods.

1. Blue Economy Development

JKP promotes sustainable utilization of ocean and coastal resources as a key economic driver. This includes development of regional Blue Economy strategies, attraction of investment in marine sectors, and advocacy for equitable sharing of maritime resources and revenues. The bloc also supports innovation and value addition in sea-based industries.

2. Fisheries and Aquaculture Development

JKP works to strengthen artisanal and commercial fisheries across the coastal counties. Key activities include:

• Capacity building and institutional strengthening of Beach Management Units (BMUs)

• Support for fisher cooperatives and community-based fishing associations

• Promotion of sustainable fishing practices

• Development of fish value chains including cold storage, processing, and market access

• Advocacy against Illegal, Unreported and Unregulated (IUU) fishing

• Promotion of aquaculture, mariculture, and seaweed farming

3. Mangrove Conservation and Blue Carbon Initiatives

Recognizing the importance of mangroves for biodiversity, fisheries breeding grounds, and climate resilience, JKP supports:

• Mangrove restoration and reforestation programs

• Community-led conservation initiatives

• Climate adaptation projects

• Exploration of blue carbon financing opportunities

• Protection of mangrove ecosystems from unsustainable exploitation

4. Marine Ecosystem Protection

JKP promotes protection of marine biodiversity through:

• Coral reef conservation initiatives

• Coastal erosion mitigation programs

• Marine pollution reduction campaigns

• Promotion of sustainable marine resource governance

• Support for marine protected areas

5. Maritime and Port-Linked Economic Development

JKP engages in policy advocacy and strategic coordination to ensure coastal counties benefit from maritime trade and port-related activities. This includes promoting logistics development, supporting maritime transport opportunities, and advocating for increased local participation in port-driven economic growth.

6. Climate Change and Coastal Resilience

The organization supports climate resilience initiatives in coastal zones through:

• Flood and disaster risk reduction strategies

• Climate-smart fisheries and agriculture

• Coastal ecosystem restoration

• Community adaptation planning

7. Waste Management and Marine Pollution Control

JKP promotes integrated regional approaches to waste management, including:

• Coastal clean-up initiatives

• Plastic reduction and recycling programs

• Circular economy partnerships

• Collaboration with private sector and development partners on sustainable waste solutions

8. Community Livelihood and Youth Empowerment

The bloc supports socio-economic empowerment initiatives targeting coastal communities, including:

• Youth and women participation in Blue Economy sectors

• Skills development and training programs

• Strengthening of cooperatives and small enterprises

• Promotion of entrepreneurship in fisheries and marine industries

9. Policy Advocacy and Intergovernmental Relations

JKP represents the collective interests of coastal counties in national and regional policy platforms. It engages in:

• Advocacy for equitable resource allocation

• Participation in national Blue Economy policy discussions

• Harmonization of inter-county regulations

• Strategic partnerships with government agencies, development partners, and the private sector

10. Partnerships and Resource Mobilization

JKP actively mobilizes resources through partnerships, MoUs, donor engagement, and Public–Private Partnerships (PPPs) to implement regional development programs across economic, environmental, and social sectors.
