Uluwatu School
Uluwatu School is an international learning community school located in Uluwatu on the Bukit Peninsula. The school serves both Indonesian and international students and began developing its learning community in 2025, initially offering programs from Grade 1 to Grade 7, with plans to expand into a full upper school in the future.
The school was created by a group of parents and educators who wanted a future-oriented education that connects children to their environment, their community, and the wider world.
Its mission is to empower an ocean-connected community of learners who love learning, remain curious, build meaningful connections, and contribute positively to the world.Because the school is located close to some of Bali’s most famous surf breaks and marine ecosystems, the ocean is integrated into the curriculum and learning experiences. Students explore the relationship between people and the sea through science, outdoor learning, and community projects.

Ocean literacy at the school means helping students understand:
how the ocean influences our liveshow human actions affect the oceanhow communities can protect marine ecosystems.

The program is informed by the UN Ocean Literacy Principles, which guide the school’s thematic learning and environmental education.
Uluwatu School integrates many hands-on ocean learning experiences into student life.
1. Ocean Literacy Lessons
Students study marine topics such as:
coral reef ecosystems
ocean currents and tides
marine biodiversity
coastal ecosystems and sustainability.
These topics are explored through science, geography, storytelling, and creative projects.
2. Beach and Marine Field Studies
The coastline around Uluwatu becomes a living classroom.
Students participate in activities such as:
guided beach walks
tide pool exploration
marine ecosystem observation
coastal field research.
This place-based learning connects classroom knowledge with real-world environments.
3. Conservation and Community Projects
Students engage in environmental action including:
beach clean-ups
marine conservation awareness campaigns
future coral reef restoration projects.
These experiences help students see how their actions can protect the ocean.
4. Ocean Skills and Surf Education
The school also runs programs that build practical ocean knowledge, such as the Ocean Connection program, where students learn to:
read ocean conditions and waves
understand tides and currents
analyse surf spots and ocean safety
collaborate and train together in the ocean environment.
These activities combine ocean science with the local surf culture of Uluwatu.
The ocean program is designed to help students become informed and responsible ocean citizens.
Key goals include:
1. Ocean Literacy
Students gain scientific knowledge about the ocean and marine ecosystems.
2. Environmental Stewardship
Learners develop responsibility for protecting oceans and coastal environments.
3. Place-Based Learning
Students understand the unique marine ecosystems of Bali and their importance.
4. Community Contribution
Students participate in projects that benefit the local environment and community.
5. Future Leadership
The school aims to inspire students to become future ocean advocates, scientists, and environmental leaders.
Uluwatu School combines international academic frameworks with ocean-focused education. By integrating ocean literacy, field studies, conservation projects, and surf-based learning, the school aims to cultivate curious, environmentally responsible learners who understand their relationship with the ocean and are motivated to protect it.
