Activities

The Foundation for Heritage Preservation & Legacy Creation is an Indigenous-led, multidisciplinary organization based in Trinidad and Tobago, dedicated to advancing integrated approaches to ocean literacy, climate resilience, biodiversity conservation, and cultural heritage preservation. Founded in 1996 and registered in 2008, the Foundation operates as a community-rooted, living systems model that connects Indigenous knowledge systems with environmental education and action. The Foundation develops and implements a holistic framework that integrates ocean literacy, climate education, wildlife conservation, food sovereignty, and youth empowerment into a cohesive and scalable system. Its work is grounded in biocultural principles, recognizing the interdependence of ecosystems, cultural identity, and community wellbeing, and advancing locally grounded solutions for sustainable ocean and coastal management. The organization contributes to ocean literacy initiatives aligned with the UNESCO Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission, including the Blue Thread Initiative, promoting culturally relevant and community-centered approaches to ocean knowledge and public engagement. Its work also aligns with global advocacy efforts such as the High Seas Alliance, supporting inclusive, rights-based ocean governance and the recognition of Indigenous Peoples in marine policy and conservation. Key programme areas include biodiversity conservation and wildlife rehabilitation; climate and ocean literacy education for children, youth, and communities; seed banking and food sovereignty initiatives; and the preservation and transmission of Indigenous knowledge systems. The Foundation operates a Heritage Learning Resource Centre, a Nature Park and Animal Sanctuary, and community-based education programmes that function as a living classroom for environmental and cultural learning. The Foundation’s work contributes to global priorities in climate adaptation, blue carbon ecosystem awareness, and sustainable development in Small Island Developing States (SIDS), demonstrating how Indigenous knowledge systems can inform scalable, community-based approaches to ocean sustainability, resilience, and education. --- **Keywords / Areas of Work:** Ocean Literacy; Climate Resilience; Blue Carbon Ecosystems; Indigenous Knowledge Systems; Biocultural Conservation; Environmental Education; Community-Based Management; SIDS; Ocean Governance
