Activities
The University of Toliara is the principal public higher education institution in southwestern Madagascar, welcoming thousands of students from the undergraduate to the doctoral level. Its mission is to train the country's future professionals through its various faculties, which cover a wide range of fields such as Pure Sciences, Law, Economics, Management, Humanities, and Medicine. Beyond traditional education, the university distinguishes itself through scientific research that is closely aligned with the specific socio-economic and environmental challenges of the greater Southern region.
The undisputed flagship of the university is the Institute of Fisheries and Marine Sciences (IH.SM), a branch of excellence recognized throughout the Indian Ocean. The IH.SM is dedicated to oceanography, fisheries, aquaculture (notably sea cucumber and seaweed farming), and the conservation of coastal ecosystems. Through major partnerships with international universities and conservation NGOs, this institute, and the university as a whole, is directly involved on the ground to promote the blue economy, protect biodiversity, and help local communities develop sustainable livelihoods.
Admission to the University of Toliara is highly competitive, requiring a high school diploma (Baccalauréat) and, for the most highly sought-after programs like the IH.SM or the Faculty of Medicine, successfully passing a rigorous entrance exam. Once admitted, students join a dynamic campus (primarily located in Maninday) that combines academic rigor, sports activities, and major scientific events. Ultimately, the institution acts as a true engine of development and innovation for Madagascar, blending top-tier education, applied research, and community engagement.
