Activities
The MIHARI Network is the only national network of Locally Managed Marine Areas (LMMAs) in Madagascar. Its overarching vision is to ensure the sustainable management of marine and coastal resources to secure the well-being of local coastal communities and protect these vital ecosystems for future generations. By uniting various LMMAs across the country, MIHARI provides a unified voice and a collaborative platform for these communities.
Its core mission is to support the networking of LMMA communities to ensure the long-term, effective management of Madagascar's marine areas. To achieve this, the network focuses on several key activities: facilitating the sharing of experiences and best practices among members, building local capacities through training, and advocating strongly for the interests and rights of coastal communities at regional and national levels.
In practice, MIHARI drives initiatives that blend conservation with community development. For example, the network supports projects that empower local women through training in sustainable ecotourism, hospitality, and resource management. Grounded in the values of solidarity, sharing, leadership, and collaboration, MIHARI strives to create synergies among its members to innovate and successfully develop Locally Managed Marine Areas throughout Madagascar.
