Activities
The Geological Survey of Bangladesh (GSB) is the apex national organization responsible for geoscientific research and mineral exploration. Its work spans traditional resource discovery, public health protection, and climate resilience.
General Activities
- Mineral & Energy Exploration: Discovered the Barapukuria Coal Field and quantifies national peat reserves (e.g., 112 million dry tons in Hakaluki Haor).
- Critical Elements: Conducts prospecting for Lithium (Li), Rare Earth Elements (REEs), and Platinum Group Elements (PGEs) in river sands.
- Environmental Health: Monitors Arsenic contamination and trace element geochemistry in shallow aquifers to guide safe drinking water policies.
- Geological Mapping & Modeling: Produces national maps and uses tools like RockWorks to create 3D models of the subsurface for infrastructure and resource planning.
- Geohazard Assessment: Maps and monitors landslides, flash floods, and riverbank erosion.
Sea-Related & Offshore Activities
GSB is increasingly pivoting toward maritime geosciences to manage Bangladesh's vast offshore territory:
- Seabed Mineral Exploration: Actively engaged in international training for Seabed Polymetallic Sulphides Exploration to assess deep-sea mineral potential.
- Bay of Bengal Studies: Investigates the resources and environmental quality of the Bay, which hosts the Bengal Fan, the world's largest submarine fan.
- Coastal & Climate Monitoring: Tracks sea-level rise, saline-water encroachment, and coastal land subsidence.
- Marine Heatwaves: Utilizes satellite data and Earth system models to monitor and forecast marine heatwaves to protect fisheries and marine ecosystems.
- Offshore Support: Provides technical geoscientific data for maritime boundary management and offshore resource governance.
