Forty-four (44) cetacean species (group of mammals that includes whales and dolphins) have been reported in Brazil. Most of these species have been reported through strandings in Brazilian beaches. Some of them have been seen year round in some areas. There are also some species that occur in Brazilian coast during just some months of the year, looking for protection and peace for reproduction.
For those who would like to better know these species, it is very important to know the Brazilian laws for the protection of Brazilian animals, and how to behave when you have the opportunity to be close to them. According to the Brazilian laws 7.643/87 and 9.605/98, hunting whales and dolphins is forbidden in Brazilian waters, as well as any kind of deliberated molestation as pursuit with vessels or swimming and hand feeding. The disrespect to these laws can be punished with a 2 to 5 years of reclusion, fine and the loss of the vessel.
