Activities

The Geochemical and Environmental Research Group (GERG) was founded in 1981 and was recognized by the Board of Regents as a “Center for Excellence” in 1987. GERG is an applied soft-money research center focused on interdisciplinary research, service, and training. Reflecting the diverse disciplines of geosciences, GERG's core competencies are Environmental Sciences (ES) and Ocean Sciences (OS). Staff and partners include geologists; inorganic and organic geochemists; analytical and contaminant chemists; biological, chemical, geological and physical oceanographers; biologists, ecologists and toxicologists. The GERG Facility complies with Federal Export Control requirements (under the authority of the US State Department and the US Treasury) due to the on-site presence and operation of underwater ocean buoyancy gliders.
