The Millennium Nucleus DEOXS is a scientific initiative focused on investigating the effects of ocean deoxygenation in the Southeast Pacific. Using a combination of models, observations, and experiments, researchers seek to understand:
- Changes in oxygen levels: How decreased oxygen in water affects marine life and biogeochemical processes.
- Impacts on biodiversity: How hypoxia (low oxygen concentration) affects organisms such as plankton.
- Biogeochemical cycles: How deoxygenation alters the carbon and nitrogen cycle, and the interaction between the ocean and the atmosphere.
