Activities
The Minderoo OceanOmics Centre at UWA is a world-class marine genomics research facility located at The University of Western Australia in Crawley, Western Australia. The Centre applies advanced genomics technologies to characterise marine biodiversity and support ocean conservation, with a focus on Australia's native marine vertebrates and regional marine ecosystems.
The Centre combines environmental DNA (eDNA), whole-genome sequencing, bioinformatics, and high-performance computing to generate large-scale biodiversity datasets and develop innovative biomonitoring tools. Its research supports biodiversity discovery, ecological understanding, conservation management, and evidence-based marine policy.
The Minderoo OceanOmics Centre provides specialist laboratory facilities for DNA and RNA extraction, library preparation, sequencing, sample curation, and genomic analysis. It operates Illumina, PacBio, and Oxford Nanopore sequencing platforms and develops computational pipelines for quality control, genome assembly, taxonomic assignment, and data visualisation.
Working closely with researchers across The University of Western Australia, the UWA Oceans Institute, government agencies, industry, and international collaborators, the Centre develops publicly accessible genomic resources and reference genomes that advance marine biodiversity research and conservation worldwide.
