Activities
Distribution and behaviour of trace metals (As, Cd, Cu, Fe, Mn, Ni, Pb (and the isotopic ratios 206/207Pb), Zn)in the North and its estuaries, including flux estimates in the plume zones. Development of a fundamental understanding of the mechanisms, kinetics and equilibria of particle-water interactions of contaminants and the development of predictive algorithms for partition coefficients (Kds). The Kds are obtained under a wide range of aquatic conditions and particle type (including phytoplankton), with the particulate phase being extensively characterised. Application of alogorithms for the development of advanced computer codes capable of accurately predicting the fate of contaminants in estuaries and coastal waters (i.e. the Estuarine Contaminant Simulator-ECoS and the 4-D GIS Pollution Information System for Contaminants in Estuaries and Seas-PISCES). Bio-impact studies are being carried out using Mytilus edulis, in which the bioavailability of contaminants is monitored using radiolabelled substrates.
Comment(s)
Current international projects involve the estuaries of the White Sea, Russia and the Ria de Aveiro, Portugal.Interested in collaboration in estuarine processes and in estary-coastal interaction studies.
