Chief Scientist for NOAA's Deep Sea Coral Research & Technology Program. I led development of the Program, which began in 2009 and supports an integrated suite of targeted deep-sea research initiatives with federal and academic partners around the country. My team led development of NOAA’s Strategic Plan for Sea Coral and Sponge Ecosystems and the first report on the State of Deep Coral Ecosystems of the United States. I also serve as a principal NOAA science advisor on national and international efforts to understand and conserve marine biodiversity.
From 2000-2007 I managed the NMFS components of NOAA's Coral Reef Conservation Program, with coral reef monitoring, research and conservation activities in Florida, the U.S. Caribbean, and the U.S. Insular Pacific.
From 1997 to 2001 I represented NOAA on domestic and international marine and coastal biodiversity policy and programs, including the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) and before that served as Senior Environmental Policy Advisor - U.S. Agency for International Development (1990-96): international environmental policies & programs.
Ph.D. from the University of Hawaii: Ecology & behavior of coral reef fishes (Family Chaetodontidae). Post-doctoral research: Growth and reproduction of Antarctic fishes; Reproductive endocrinology of sex-changing fishes.
