The institution is mainly engaged in services and research on environmental monitoring, QC for environmental monitoring and river basin management in the Pearl River drainage basin (2320 km length, 440000 km2, covering 8 provinces, 2nd largest river in China). Also responsible for the water and ecological environment monitoring in the Pear River Estuary Region, water quality investigation and assessment of trans-national-boundary and trans-province-boundary Rivers and the drinking water sources of Hong Kong and Macau.
