Blue Resources Trust (BRT) is a non-profit Sri Lankan organisation that promotes informed science-based decision making to facilitate the conservation and sustainable use of marine resources. BRT provides a platform for scientists to expand research in the Indian Ocean, conducts education and awareness projects, and encourages the participation of local communities in the management of marine resources. Core focal areas include coral reefs, seagrass, and fisheries (special focus on sharks and rays) research, together with marine policy development (including for fisheries management, wildlife trade, sustainable livelihoods, and marine protected areas) at national and international scales.
The core team has extensive experience working in Sri Lanka, and internationally, having built networks and partnerships with numerous national and international organizations encompassing similar visions. BRT also plays a role in advising the Marine Conservation Unit of the Department of Wildlife Conservation (DWC) on research and conservation initiatives, collaborates with the Department of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (DFAR), and coordinates closely with the Marine Environment Protection Authority (MEPA). BRT have at times directly advised the Minister of Wildlife on matters related to wildlife treaties such as CITES and CMS.
BRT also provides consultancy services in marine field surveys, marine mapping, Environmental Impact Assessments (EIAs), technical advice on marine species and habitats, project management support, and as fixers for documentary film crews (underwater photographers and videographers).
