MuMa – the Museum of the Sea in Milazzo, located in the castle of Milazzo, is a spiritual journey to rediscover the harmony between man and the sea through science and art.
The museum was created in response to the moving and tragic story of the sperm whale “Siso” that died in the summer of 2017 in the waters of the Aeolian Islands due to an illegal drift net. The biologist Carmelo Isgrò had the idea to realize the museum after having recovered and cleaned the bones and then rebuilt the skeleton of the whale.
MuMa is not a typical museum of the sea, rather, it is a site where science and art blend and expand. Visitors will reach an advanced awareness by means of interactive educational videos, virtual reality, augmented reality, and multimedia artistic installations with the aim to educate visitors regarding the anthropogenic impacts and the necessary changes to make regarding the relationship between humans and the sea.
