Voice of the Oceans Expedition
Voice of the Oceans is a global movement dedicated to combating plastic pollution. Since August 2021, we have been sailing around the planet to raise awareness about environmental challenges. This ongoing expedition, led by the Schurmann family, represents years of commitment to ocean preservation.
As we navigate the seas, we highlight the urgent issue of plastic pollution in the oceans, engage communities to inspire social action, and address the impacts of climate change. Supported by the United Nations Environment Program (UNEP), our crew actively documents everything we encounter in the oceans and along coastlines, including some of the planet’s most remote and untouched regions.
The expedition is also a platform for scientists, researchers and NGOs. They are invited to join the crew of the sailing vessel Kat on board and conduct on-the-ground research in the world’s oceans and islands. We want to raise awareness and encourage as many people as possible to change their consumption habits and their relationship with single-use plastic. With Voz dos Oceanos, we are promoting change on several fronts.
Voice of the Oceans Scientific has as its main partner the University of São Paulo (USP), which has consistently confirmed its outstanding position in some of the most important global reputation rankings, including the World Reputation Rankings of the British consultancy Times Higher Education and the Best Global Universities 2022 of the North American publisher US News.
Under the leadership of Prof. Dr. Alexander Turra, coordinator of the UNESCO Chair of Ocean Sustainability, the USP Oceanographic Institute is launching the Voz dos Oceanos initiative, which addresses the problem of marine litter on two fronts within the concept of Citizen Science:
- Litter monitoring program in collaboration with the community through a mobile application to record and share information analyzed by partner scientists.
- Monitoring of microplastics in marine organisms based on the analysis carried out by Voice of the Oceans Scientific project USP researchers of mussels and oysters purchased at sites along the Voz dos Oceanos route.
The stages of the journey
- Mapping local scenarios on land, aligned with the expedition’s waypoints.
- Interviewing schools, NGOs and local partners to identify vulnerabilities and offer solutions: Voice of the Oceans local centers.
- Creation of educational materials and gamification.
- Educational workshops: studies on oceans, waste and sustainability.
- Radio and TV Voice of the Oceans (web) for the dissemination of news about the expedition and actions on land.
- Proposal for transversal and transdisciplinary inclusion of the theme in the school curriculum.
Results will be measured through a final assessment document:
Implementation and impact of educational actions, integration of the theme in pedagogical-political projects and strengthening of local centers (composed of schools, NGOs and partners).
Progress in solutions to the initial mapped problems, best practices and sustainability after the trip.
Tax benefits for companies
Companies that report a real profit can commit to the Education for the Oceans project by recognizing donations up to 2% of their gross operating profit as a business expense.

ABOUT OUR PARTNERS
The Supereco Institute is a Civil Society Organization of Public Interest (OSCIP), founded in 1994, with renowned activities in different fields of education, communication, conservation and sustainability.
It applies the “learning by doing” methodology to form groups of multipliers – managers, teachers, students, government leaders, partner NGOs, cooperatives, networks and local communities.
Escola Concept is a signatory to the Global Compact network and connects each project students develop to one of the challenges facing the world today. In the three lessons, students learn through hands-on activities embedded in a structure that provides experience in four pillars: sustainability, digital literacy, entrepreneurship and collaboration. As part of the initiative, students embark on a journey to save and conserve planet water and launch a design thinking challenge linked to environmental education.
