Attendees will learn how to establish preservation practices in their library with limited staff and budget. This preservation course will discuss responsible stewardship of collections, integration of preservation into daily activities, maximizing limited resources, establishing priorities, and advocacy. Topics include appropriate care of books, papers, photographs (traditional & digital), film and other nonprint items. Class activities will include lectures, discussions, student presentations, and hands-on activities. Hands-on activities include mending a book, cleaning a manuscript, and flattening documents. Final project will be a written preservation plan for a collection in the student\'s library. Students will learn: * methods for providing preventive care, including good storage conditions, housing materials, emergency planning, and careful handling of collections; * to identify preservation needs and set priorities * about reformatting options including microfilm, paper to paper, and microfilm & paper to digital * about challenges in preserving digital content Target audience: professionals who provide care and access to collections. Selected students will be requested to fulfill pre-reading assignments.
