The series of JCOMM Workshops on Advances of Marine Climatology (CLIMAR) is meant for users and developers of marine climatological data and datasets. The third JCOMM Workshop on Advances of Marine Climatology (CLIMAR-3) took place at the Maritime Branch in Gdynia at the Institute of Meteorology and Water Management, Gdynia, Poland, from 6 to 9 May 2008. Major goals of the workshop were (i) to review ongoing developments in the flow and standardization of marine (meteorological and oceanographic) data and metadata under JCOMM, (ii) to foster and coordinate the development of marine (meteorological and oceanographic) climate data and products, including ICOADS, and (iii) to seek and compile appropriate contributions for a second revision of the Advances in the Applications of Marine Climatology (JCOMM TR No. 13)—which constitutes the Dynamic Part of the WMO Guide to the Applications of Marine Climatology (WMO/TD-No. 781)—and the resulting Release 3 (August 2013) of this publication recently became freely available via the WMO website.
Based on the success of the series of CLIMAR workshops initiated in 1999, the Joint WMO/IOC Technical Commission for Oceanography and Marine Meteorology, at its fourth session (JCOMM-4), Yeosu, Republic of Korea, May 2012 agreed to the proposal for a fourth such workshop, CLIMAR-4. The major Goals of the CLIMAR-4 workshop are:
1. to highlight the societal benefits of the applications of marine climatology, including for climate services;
2. to review the needs of the scientific and operational communities for marine climate data and products;
3. to assess the state of the marine climate data component of the global climate observing system, identify gaps, and provide guidance on how to address them;
4. to review ongoing developments in the integration of observations across multiple observing domains (land - lower atmosphere / surface ocean - deep ocean - space); and
5. to encourage submissions to the Dynamic Part of the WMO Guide to the Applications of Marine Climatology.
Invited and contributed presentations will explore recent advances in marine climatology and its applications.
In addition to the main meeting, there will be an additional day focused on the ICOADS Value Added Dataset (IVAD) project on the Friday 13th June.
