Overview Research Data Management (RDM) covers the planning, creating, storing, organizing, accessing, sharing, describing, publishing and curating of data. RDM is mandated by many funding agencies and increasingly by governments to provide access to funded research results. The management of data, particularly large-scale data, has many challenges, and the roles of researchers, facilities that manage marine data, repositories and libraries are coming together to provide access, preservation and archive of this data and the scholarly products associated with it. Learning Outcomes - Recognize the importance of good research data management practice; - Advanced knowledge in the current landscape of Research Data Management, organized efforts to develop standards and tools in this field; - Understanding of the roles of Data Managers and Information Managers in Research Data Management and how they can become collaborators in this RDM; - Develop skills in writing and implementing a Data Management Plan, including those associated with Funding agency requirements and mandates; - Knowledge of the terminology of Open Access and Open Data as it applies to Research Data Management; - Develop skills in writing data citations. Course Topics - Overview of Research Data - Open Data - Research Data and publication lifecycles - Data organisation and standards - Data Management Plan - Organising Research Data - Making Data available - Access to Research Data - Linked Data - Towards integrated data and information systems Target Audience - marine researchers and postgraduate students; - repository managers (data and/or documents); - marine data librarians; - marine information (library) managers. Course Pre-requisites: - Interest or new responsibilities in working with marine data and/or information - Working knowledge of the English language
NOTE: priority will be given to participants originating from the Caribbean Region. UNESCO is committed to promote gender equality. Therefore applications from women are strongly encouraged. Interested candidates can apply for the course by submitting the following documents: - OTGA Application Form - Short CV (max 3 pages) - Endorsement letter (from employer or host organisation, in case of asking for sponsorship) Both full- and co-sponsoring are available for a limited number of participants. Sponsored participants will receive one or a combination of the following cost items: 1) air ticket, 2) living and accommodation support, 3) medical insurance. The selection of participants who will be sponsored will take into consideration: - Applicant country’s development status (preference will be given to LIFDCs) - Endorsement of the candidate’s application by his/her employer and any co-sponsoring - Expected impact of the training for the applicants’ institution - Possibility of any co-sponsorship (co-sponsorship is an asset for selection) UNESCO is committed to promote gender equality.
