At its 10th Session held in Muscat, Oman, 24-26 March 2015, the Intergovernmental Coordination Group for the Indian Ocean Tsunami Warning and Mitigation System (ICG/IOTWMS) decided to conduct an IOWave16 Exercise in August 2016 and established a Task Team to plan and organise it, reporting to the Steering Group, composed of members nominated by Australia (chair), India (vice-chair), Indonesia and Seychelles, and representatives from the IOTWMS Tsunami Service Providers (TSPs). At its 10th meeting held in Perth, Australia, 19-20 August 2015, the IOTWMS Steering Group accepted Australia's nomination of Dr Yuelong Miao as chairperson and decided to conduct the IOWave16 Exercise in the first week of September 2016.
