By invitation only.
The main objective of this workshop is to reinforce the capacities in the different partner countries covered by the project (Morocco, Mauritania, Senegal, The Gambia, Guinea, Guinea-Bissau and Cabo Verde) by promoting scientific discussions on the possible effects of climate change on the productivity in the Canary Current Large Marine Ecosystem (CCLME). More specifically, this workshop aims to: - Introduce the Project; - Present the publications (IOC Technical Series 110 and 115) completed for phases I and II of the Project; - Present the current knowledge in the region and challenges identified in terms of the possible effects of climate change on the productivity in the CCLME; - Share the know-how gained by the related IOC working groups: GO2NE, GOA-ON, TrendsPO and GeoHABs; - Give room for discussions on the scientific challenges in the region; - Discuss the case studies to be produced in a collaborative manner over the duration of the project; - Discuss statistical and spatial data analysis to better understand the relationship of climate change and the trends in different variables; - Explore the data available; - Discussions on cooperation and needs in terms of capacity development. The main outcome of the workshop is a list of case studies to be developed throughout the project, by the panel of experts involved. Therefore, this technical workshop will be instrumental for the subsequent scientific development of the project. Additionally, the Steering Committee of the project, with the goal of discussing the way forward, will meet before and after the meeting (17 and 20 September); the project results will be integrated into interregional discussions on similarities and differences across the various eastern boundary upwelling systems. This is the first workshop programmed within the 3rd Phase of the project entitled “Enhancing oceanography capacities in CCLME Western Africa countries”, which is implemented by the Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission of UNESCO (IOC-UNESCO) and funded by the Spanish Agency for International Development Cooperation (AECID).
