BBNJ workshop on the role of science and a scientific body under the new BBNJ instrument
Summary

The purpose of the workshop will be to discuss the role of science and the provision of scientific advice under a new BBNJ instrument, prior to the second Intergovernmental Conference (25 March - 5 April 2019). The agenda for the workshop will include sessions specifically focused on existing ocean science bodies; cooperation and data sharing mechanisms; science-related needs to be addressed under the BBNJ Agreement; the approach followed under existing regional and sectoral organisations with scientific functions; and how the text of a new BBNJ instrument could reflect and fulfill the requirements for scientific support. This two-day workshop will provide an opportunity to address and explore science-based issues that have emerged to date through the process to develop a BBNJ instrument, and explore avenues that will lead to a strong and effective high seas approach.

Co-organized by Fisheries and Oceans Canada, Global Affairs Canada and the High Seas Alliance.
