IOC/UNESCO, as part of its Tsunami Programme is currently implementing major initiatives aimed at reducing the vulnerability of its Member States in the Caribbean and adjacent regions to tsunamis and other coastal hazards. The UNESCO/IOC/CTIC DIPECHO project: ”Strengthening Capacities of Early Warning and Response for Tsunami and Other Coastal Hazards in the Caribbean” focuses on supporting the CARIBE EWS, coordinated by ICG/CARIBE, to develop accurate products towards the reduction of the tsunami vulnerability and the advance of the global tsunami preparedness in the area. The pilot countries participating in this project are: Antigua and Barbuda, Barbados, St. Vincent and the Grenadines and Trinidad & Tobago. The National Tsunami Workshop which includes the Adaptation of the National Tsunami Protocols is hosted by the Caribbean Disaster Emergency Management Agency (CDEMA) in collaboration with the National Emergency Management Office (NEMO) and supported by the Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO/IOC) and its Caribbean Tsunami Information Centre (CTIC), the Government of Trinidad & Tobago and the European Commission Directorate-General for European Civil Protection and Humanitarian Aid Operations (ECHO). The National Tsunami Workshop is a two day activity which seeks to facilitate the adaptation of the draft generic national tsunami warning communication protocols and guidelines, a key output of the Regional Tsunami Workshop convened July 22 – 26, 2019, in Barbados. The national tsunami warning focal points (TWFPs), national tsunami warning centers (NTWC), tsunami emergency responders (TERs) and national disaster/emergency stakeholders will be awarded an opportunity to adapt the generic protocols to their national context. Objectives: The objectives of this workshop are as follows: 1. To expose national stakeholders to the draft generic national tsunami warning communication protocols and guideline tool; 2. To facilitate the adaptation of the draft generic national tsunami warning communication protocols and guidelines tool to the country-specific situation of the pilot country Trinidad & Tobago; 3. To facilitate brainstorming on relevant country specific issues regarding the tsunami hazard; 4. To produce a draft National Warning Communication Tsunami Protocols and SOPs for the pilot country of Trinidad & Tobago as an annex to their individual National Disaster Plans; 5. To outline the trigger for the Regional Coordination Plan (led by the Caribbean Disaster Emergency Management Agency) -Tsunami Hazard Annex within the National Tsunami Warning Communication Protocols and SOPs.
