By invitation only.
Convenors: Jane Lubchenco and Patricio Bernal A workshop on changing patterns in hypoxia and anoxia in Eastern Boundary Upwelling Ecosystems is being organized as a parallel session within the "Eastern Boundary Upwelling Ecosystems" symposium at Las Palmas, (Canary Islands, Spain, from the 2 to the 6 of June 2008). The workshop will take place on the 3rd of June 2008 from 3:15pm to 6:45pm. The workshop is being convened because of evidence of changes in hypoxic/anoxic events in a number of Eastern Boundary Current ecosystems and associated questions about possible causative agents including climate change. The scientific goals of the workshop are to compare patterns and processes related to hypoxia/anoxia across different Eastern Boundary Upwelling Ecosystems. Specifically, we seek to answer the following questions for each different system: Are there documented changes in the severity, spatial extent or duration of hypoxia/anoxia? Over what time scales? If there are changes, what might be the causative agents? Is there evidence that oceanic or atmospheric conditions have changed? How might these patterns change as climate changes? What are the ecological, fisheries and social consequences? The workshop will look at inshore, mid-shelf and shelf-edge processes, in the past, present and future. A critical assessment of these new emerging ecological coastal conditions using all the data available is urgently needed. This will likely be quite a challenge since we might have not documented many of the relevant phenomena. Nonetheless, a comprehensive analysis of our existing knowledge base would be very useful, given the potentially large social implications. As Co-Conveners we are convinced that the scientific community needs to urgently address these questions, develop the necessary observational and modeling programs in order to remove existing uncertainties, and build and offer solid and reliable guidance to policy makers. Papers from this workshop will be published either as a special issue in a leading journal or as part of the proceedings of the symposium. We sincerely hope that you will be able to join us in this common endeavour and look forward to your response.
