Summary

The SDG200 course will take place onboard the Norwegian sailing vessel Statsraad Lemkuhl from May 1– August 25, 2022, while sailing across the Pacific from Valparaíso in Chile to Palau.

Participating students will be a part of the crew and have all their classes onboard. UiB teachers will teach onboard the ship about the important topics of ocean, climate and society related to the UN’s sustainable development goals, especially SDG 14 Life below water and SDG 13 Climate action. The course is an interdisciplinary 30 ECTS course called Ocean-climate-society (SDG200) and is open for students from all academic backgrounds, as solving sustainability challenges demands extensive collaboration across fields.

Objectives and Content

In 2015 the United Nations adopted the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, with 17 interconnected Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) addressing the global challenges of poverty, inequality, climate change, environmental degradation, prosperity, peace, and justice.

This course will employ the SDGs as a platform from which to gain a comprehensive understanding of planetary sustainability. This includes building skills for interdisciplinary cooperation needed for humanity to thrive for generations to come, simultaneously avoiding large-scale abrupt or irreversible environmental change. The course aims at recruiting a highly interdiscliplinary student group to facilitate incorporating individual differences of opinions and actions, cultural and social backgrounds and learning negotiating across these differences. 

SDG200 is an interdisciplinary course, with a particular focus on SDG14 (Life below water) and SDG13 (Climate action). The course further showcases SDG17 (Partnerships), while at all times reflecting upon how all SDGs are embedded and interlinked within the Agenda 2030.  

Working in teams will highlight the importance of cooperation whether sailing a tall ship or contributing towards a sustainable future. Multiple stops in Pacific island countries, including a longer stay in Fiji, allows the students to interact with and learn from local communities and experience first-hand how life in the Pacific region is connected to the ocean and climate.

Notes

Tuition fees:

Participating students will have to pay 3.410 USD (29.250 NOK) for food and accommodation for 117 days on board the sailing vessel, as well as for their own travel to Valparaiso in Chile, and from Palau.

A limited number of fellowships will be made available through IOC/OTGA (priority will be given to candidates from the Pacific SIDS)

Admission requirements:

Students applying for admission to the course should have studied at least one year at university level (min. 60 ECTS). You must have an approved seaman's health certificate before boarding. Valid health certificate issued in accordance with rule and section A-I / 9 of the STCW Code (only in Norwegian). Documents: 

Applicants must submit a CV (max 2 pages) together with a short (max 500 words) letter of motivation where they explain:

  • why they wish to attend the course and how it relates to their interests and experience (academic and other) and their future plans
  • how they may contribute to the student community and the learning environment  
  • the challenges do they foresee with staying four months away from home under the special circumstances on board Statsraad Lehmkuhl.

In addition the applicants must submit:

  •          Transcript of records (an official statement listing courses/subjects you have completed at your university).
  •           Copy of passport or picture ID showing full name, date of birth and gender, if you are not applying with a Norwegian ID number.

Document requirements: 

  • We require all documents to be scanned from original documentation.
  • If the original language of your documents is not English or a Scandinavian language, officially certified copies of a translation to one of these languages must accompany certified copies of your documents in the original language.
  • The documents must be uploaded as PDF files of good quality.

 Selection criteria:

If the number of applicants exceeds the number of places, the selection of students will be made according to the following criteria:

  • CV and motivation letter
  • Academic diversity and interdisciplinary approach
  • International representation
  • Gender diversity

An interdisciplinary admission committee including faculty and students is responsible for the admission process. Shortlisted candidates may be invited to an (online) interview.
