This workshop aims to train Park Rangers of National Marine Parks and scientific personnel of Tierra del Fuego, Argentina, and Chile in biodiversity monitoring techniques for rocky intertidal areas using images (photo-quadrants) processed with Artificial Intelligence for the classification of benthic species. This activity intends to create a network of park rangers and scientists to detect long-term changes in the intertidal rocky shores and contribute data and knowledge to managers and the Marine Biodiversity Observation Network Pole to Pole of the Americas (MBON Pole to Pole). Participants will be able to implement tools developed by the MBON Pole to Pole for monitoring environmental conditions and biodiversity simultaneously, and generate biodiversity indicators that can be displayed in simple data dashboards for reporting.

Learning outcomes

[ENG] After completing this training, students should be able to:

• Build foundational knowledge on: the ecology of rocky intertidal habitats in Patagonia; indicator species for evaluating habitat health of rocky shores; and collaborative biodiversity monitoring networks (i.e. MBON).
• Apply standardized field survey protocols for biodiversity monitoring.
• Analyze benthic imagery using open-source artificial intelligence applications.
• Visualize and map biodiversity observations with R-based tools.
• Create data dashboards using pre-built R code.
• Develop a coordinated biodiversity surveying plan in Tierra del Fuego and Chile.

[ESP] Al completar con éxito esta capacitación, los alumnos podrán:

• Desarrollar conocimientos básicos sobre: la ecología de los hábitats intermareales rocosos en la Patagonia; Especies indicadoras para evaluar la salud del hábitat de las costas rocosas; y redes colaborativas de monitoreo de la biodiversidad (es decir, MBON).
• Aplicar protocolos estandarizados de estudios de campo para el monitoreo de la biodiversidad.
• Analizar imágenes bentónicas utilizando aplicaciones de inteligencia artificial de código abierto.
• Visualizar y mapear observaciones de biodiversidad con herramientas basadas en R.
• Cree paneles de datos utilizando código R prediseñado.
• Desarrollar un plan coordinado de estudio de la biodiversidad en Tierra del Fuego y Chile.
