The Protected Resources Division (PRD) of the National Marine Fisheries Service (NMFS), Southeast Regional Office is charged with administering the agency's responsibilities under the Endangered Species Act (ESA) and the Marine Mammal Protection Act in the Southeast U.S., and is responsible for the coastal areas from North Carolina through Texas, Puerto Rico, and the U.S. Virgin Islands. The division's goals are the preservation of the species protected under these Acts, along with their ecosystems, and the recovery of endangered and threatened populations. The Deepwater Horizon (DWH) oil spill Natural Resource Damage Assessment is likely to result in a large number of projects to restore natural resource injuries resulting from the oil spill. The PRD is responsible for consulting on all federally authorized and/or funded activities that may affect NMFS listed species and their designated critical habitats.
