Dr. Dimitris N. Poursanidis is a marine scientist and Earth Observation specialist working at the interface of seascape ecology, coastal habitat mapping, blue carbon science and marine restoration. His work focuses on the mapping and monitoring of shallow marine ecosystems, with particular emphasis on seagrass meadows, macroalgal forests, coastal biodiversity, ecosystem condition and human pressures.
He combines satellite remote sensing, drone surveys, GIS, machine learning, scientific diving, field validation and underwater imaging to support marine habitat assessment, restoration planning and long-term monitoring. His research and applied work contribute to blue carbon assessment, nature-based solutions, marine protected area management, ecosystem services evaluation and science-policy processes.
He is particularly interested in translating field and Earth Observation evidence into practical tools for conservation, restoration, reporting and decision-making across the Mediterranean and other coastal regions.
