My focus is the study of biodiversity, carbon and nutrient cycles in the ocean with particular emphasis on developing a community of practice such as the Marine Biodiversity Observation Network. I have worked on the role of continental margins in the productivity of the global oceans. I head the Institute for Marine Remote Sensing (IMaRS) at the University of South Florida which specializes in applications of satellite observation of continental shelves. We do much work in situ to validate satellite ocean color data. Our group is a member in various NASA ocean remote sensing programs. We collect AVHRR, MODIS and SeaWiFS data. We maintained the CARIACO Ocean Time-Series Program in the Cariaco Basin from 1997 to 2017 in collaboration with Venezuelan scientists at the Fundacion La Salle (EDIMAR) on Margarita Island, the Universidad de Oriente, and Universidad Simon Bolivar. We were involved in research of the Deepwater Horizon oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico using satellite data. Our group also works on harmful algal blooms (HAB) including red tides, and in the assessment and classification of coral reef, wetland, and other coastal environments using traditional oceanographic and remote sensing data. Our group is engaged in rremote sensing, including hyperspectral studies of ecological and biogeochemical processes in these systems.
