Skills
Prof. Paolo Ciavola is an Associate Professor in the Department of Physics and Earth Sciences of the University of Ferrara. He holds a MSc in Geology from the University of Bologna (Italy) and a PhD in Marine Sciences from the University of Algarve (Portugal). Previously to his current appointment since 1996, he worked at the University of Hull (UK), British Geological Survey (UK) and University of Algarve (Portugal). His current main research interests include coastal processes, the impact of climate change on coastal morphology, the role of extreme storm events in generating coastal risk. He is on the Editorial Board of the Journal of Coastal Research, Continental Shelf Research and the Journal of Integrated Coastal Zone Management of Portuguese Speaking Countries. He has authored over 60 papers on peer-reviewed journals, 20 book chapters, 1 Special Issue of the Journal of Coastal Research (CERF), 1 Special Issue of Geomorphology (Elsevier), 1 Special Issue of Natural Hazards and Earth Sciences Systems (EGU), 58 papers in Congress Proceedings. In 1994 he was awarded a national prize by the Italian Geological Society; he was elected a Clare Hall Fellow by the University of Cambridge (UK) for the Academic Year 1999-2000. He is also an Executive of the Commission on Coastal Systems of the International Geographical Union. He serves on the Technical Working Group on Coastal Risk of IOC-UNESCO. He is also a reviewer of FP7 projects for the EU and of the 5th Assessment of IPCC (Chapter 23 on regional impacts-Europe).
