I. Detailed characterization of plankton biodiversity and geographic distribution in the China Seas and adjacent waters.
① Clarified the species diversity of phytoplankton in China’s coastal seas (2,772 species), and revised and named the Chinese common names for prevalent coastal phytoplankton species; promoted the application of community diversity indices and assessment efforts; developed a rapid identification and monitoring system for common micro- and meso-zooplankton in China’s coastal waters; improved the international Utermöhl method for quantitative phytoplankton analysis, advancing the quantification of marine phytoplankton data in China.
② Conducted comprehensive studies on the interactions between plankton distribution and key physical–chemical oceanographic processes across China’s coastal seas; pioneered research on plankton functional groups in the China Seas, including production of transparent exopolymer particles, diatom silicification, cyanobacterial nitrogen fixation, and coccolithophore calcification.
③ Organized scientific activities, conferences, and special issues to promote research on biodiversity in China’s coastal seas.
II. Focus on key biological oceanographic processes of plankton.
① Elucidated the spatiotemporal succession processes of algal bloom species; examined grazing control by meso- and micro-zooplankton.
② Established computational models for phytoplankton cell surface area/volume and methods for estimating cellular carbon biomass, quantified key parameters for carbon metrics, and formed international standards; clarified critical processes of phytoplankton in marine biological carbon sequestration, including primary production, phytoplankton sinking, fecal pellet packaging and sinking by zooplankton, carbon sequestration via the classic food chain, production and transformation of dissolved organic carbon, and sinking of transparent exopolymer particles; confirmed that rapid diatom sinking is the primary pathway for biological carbon sequestration in China’s coastal seas, and that silicification by picophytoplankton is an important carbon sequestration pathway in the China Seas and adjacent regions.
III. Protection of the ecological environment in China’s coastal seas and adjacent oceans.
① Systematically integrated in-situ observations and historical data from land-based areas, estuaries/sewage outfalls, and marine regions of Bohai Bay, establishing a monitoring and assessment system for terrestrial pollutant fluxes into the sea; developed novel microfluidic detection techniques for heavy metals and antibiotics; established water quality benchmark values for pollutants; developed assessment models for water quality criteria and environmental carrying capacity of emerging pollutants; proposed priority control and emission reduction schemes based on water quality improvement targets.
② Conducted consecutive years of in-situ ecological surveys and experiments in the South China Sea and the adjacent eastern Indian Ocean and western Pacific Ocean, filling gaps in the spatiotemporal distribution of plankton populations/functional groups and their carbon sequestration efficiencies, as well as in the cycling of elements such as carbon, nitrogen, sulfur, and silicon, and in molecular ecology.
