I am a marine biologist and geneticist whose research focuses on biogeography and diversity of marine invertebrates, by combining more traditional taxonomic and ecological studies with the latest advances in population genetics. I am currently exploring invertebrate diversity in recently discovered subseafloor cavities in deep-sea hydrothermal vent systems. The goal is to characterise this extension of vent ecosystems and clarify the role of subseafloor cavities in dispersal and resilience at 2500 m depths.
As a research line, I am interested in understanding the mechanisms behind the colonization of newly emerged islands by marine invertebrates with limited dispersal abilities, as well as dispersal routes across important oceanic biogeographical barriers. Bathyal habitats – such as seamounts and hydrothermal vents – reduce the functional distance to remote islands, but their role as stepping-stones, especially during low sea-level stands, is far from well understood. Understanding past dispersal routes might be the key to forecast changes on the oceanic biotic dynamics threatened by climate change.
