Since 1995, Sequoia Scientific, Inc. has been a global
leader in instrumentation for in situ measurements of suspended particles and
water optical properties, serving the ocean science community and related
fields.
Sequoia introduced the first LISST (Laser In Situ Scattering
and Transmissometry) instrument in 1995, establishing a new standard for
measuring particle size distributions and concentration directly in natural
waters. Since then, our technologies have become widely adopted across
oceanography, limnology, and sediment research, with thousands of instruments
deployed worldwide to study coastal, open ocean, and freshwater systems.
Our instruments are used to quantify particles and their
role in critical ocean processes, including sediment transport, carbon cycling,
primary productivity, and light propagation. These measurements underpin both
fundamental research and applied environmental monitoring and increasingly
serve as in situ reference data for optical oceanography and satellite remote
sensing.
Building on this foundation, Sequoia expanded into advanced
optical measurements since 2016, including hyperspectral backscatter and absorption
and high-resolution scattering instruments. These capabilities extend our
ability to characterize aquatic particles not only by size and concentration,
but also by their hyperspectral optical properties—enabling new insights into
particle composition and ecosystem dynamics.
Today, Sequoia instruments integrate multiple complementary
measurement approaches, including laser diffraction, holography, and
hyperspectral optics. Together, these systems measure particle size,
concentration, morphology, and key optical properties such as beam attenuation,
volume scattering function (VSF), and hyperspectral backscatter and absorption,
with hyperspectral beam attenuation to come.
While our primary focus remains ocean and freshwater
science, Sequoia instruments are also used in select industrial applications, first
and foremost oil & gas drilling operations but also dredging, hydropower,
and process monitoring, where robust particle measurement is critical.
All design, engineering, and manufacturing take place at our
headquarters in Bellevue, Washington, USA. From there, we support a global
customer base, with most of our instruments sold internationally.
