I am an oceanographer and a doctoral researcher in Science Education at the University of Lisbon’s Institute of Education. I am the founder and coordinator of Monitoramento Mirim Costeiro (Junior Coastal Monitoring Program), a citizen science initiative recognized by UNESCO as an Ocean Decade Project. Since creating the program in 2012 in southern Brazil and later expanding it to Portugal, I have worked to establish it as a reference model for fostering ocean literacy and civic engagement. Today, MMC is regarded as a Lighthouse Project within the Global Blue Schools Network.
Over the past 14 years, I have developed and implemented hands-on coastal monitoring methodologies for elementary school students, empowering children to investigate their local environment, contribute to community-based data, and engage as Junior Ocean Guardians. I have also trained hundreds of teachers in Brazil and Portugal, helping schools integrate ocean literacy into their curricula through practical, place-based, and inquiry-based approaches to science education.
In my doctoral research, I focus on designing and evaluating pedagogical frameworks that promote ocean citizenship in schools, combining citizen science, environmental education, and community engagement to strengthen the connection between students, schools, and their coastal ecosystems.
