Activities
Graduated in Geography (1987), M.Sc. in Oceanography (1995) and Ph.D. in Sciences (Physical Geography) from the University of São Paulo – USP (1996), Jarbas Bonetti is presently a Full Professor at the Department of Oceanography of the Federal University of Santa Catarina (UFSC), where he coordinated the activities of the Coastal Oceanography Laboratory from 1999 to 2019. He works in the graduation and post-graduation programs in Physical Geography and Oceanography at UFSC. From 2007-2008 he acted as visiting researcher at IFREMER (Brest, France), from 2014-2015 as a visiting principal fellow at the University of Wollongong (Wollongong, Australia) and from 2019 to 2020 as a visiting researcher at ISMAR (Bologna, Italy). The researches and projects in development by his group are related to the use of Geomatics (Remote Sensing & Geographic Information Systems) in the spatial analysis of marine data. His main field of scientific interest is the behavior of transitional coastal systems, with emphasis on the integrated oceanographic characterization of sheltered coasts aiming the recognition of sensible environments and the evaluation of their sustainability to different uses. The focuses are on 1) Geodiversity (sedimentary and morphological characterization of the shallow marine bottom layer) and; 2) Coastal risk and vulnerability assessment to marine hazards.
