I'm the co-founder of the NGO Guardians of the Blue based in Byblos, Lebanon, as well as an independent consultant. My background is in development economics and sustainable blue economy, and my main interest lies in strengthening the ocean science-policy-society interface in the MENA and beyond.
Through Guardians of the Blue, I'm developing ocean literacy in Lebanon among scuba divers and youth; I'm supporting the creation of a Marine Protected Area in Byblos through citizen science; I'm organizing scuba diving cleanups, which removed 4 tonnes of marine debris from the sea so far; I'm working on an initiative to mitigate the impacts of the lionfish invasion in Lebanon through sustainable seafood consumption, awareness-raising and lionfish jewelry-making (https://weareguardiansoftheblue.org/lions-mane); and I'm sharing accessible information and visuals of Lebanese marine life on the Instagram page @guardiansoftheblue.
As a consultant, I support organizations on project management, research, science diplomacy, and outreach. Currently, I am working with:
· IEEE France through Horizon Europe projects CS-MACH1 – focusing on scaling up marine citizen science data uptake – and ObsSea4Clim – strengthening climate EOVs and associated practices;
· WWF Mediterranean through the Blue South Med project – supporting the creation of the future Byblos MPA;
· Goumbook through the MENA Oceans Initiative – supporting the management of the MENA Oceans Network, the Middle East Mangrove Knowledge Hub, and the MENA Oceans Summit.
I am passionate about the relationship between humankind and the ocean, ocean literacy, citizen science, scientific diving, ecosystem regeneration, species identification, photography, storytelling, handcrafts, blue mind, marine cultural heritage, Lebanon and the Mediterranean.
